Brands Should Feel Discovered
JournalWhat we believeAugust 26, 20263 min readThe strongest identities feel as though they already existed, with rooms you have not entered yet.
Most identities feel selected. Someone sat down and chose a font, three colors and a tone of voice, and you can feel the choosing. The result is a set of decisions, and decisions age.
The identities we admire feel found. They give the impression that the brand was already there, fully formed, and that the designers simply opened the door. There is always the sense of more rooms: a back office, a kitchen, a cellar, a garden nobody has photographed yet.
The test is simple: can you imagine the tenth product without asking us?
The test is simple. Can you imagine the sticker, the uniform, the apology email and the tenth product without asking us? When Dancing Crab's crab put on roller skates, the sardine had to shuffle and the oyster had to waltz. No meeting was needed. The logic was deep enough that the next expression felt inevitable.
That inevitability is what we mean by discovered. It is not a style. It is a logic that produces style, on demand, for people who were never in the room with us.
It also asks for a kind of humility. A discovered brand belongs to its idea before it belongs to the studio that found it. We try to leave our fingerprints on the process and off the result.
